About Us
Hammerhead Carpentry, Inc., is a remodeling company with a special focus on universal design and green improvements. HCI can provide guidance on selecting and installing universal features and green products; we find solutions that best fit your needs and that will pay large dividends in terms of long-term satisfactions of your project and cost containment. We can design kitchen and bathroom, or accomplish any other remodeling projects, large or small. No matter where you start in the process, you will eventually need to hire a professional remodeler to make modifications to your home. Remember you are buying a service rather than a product.
Barrier-free home
The goal of universal design (UD) is to create solutions to common barriers. UD is not a complicated concept; most universal features are standard building elements that are placed differently, selected more carefully, or re-dimensioned. In 2007, our interest in universal design led us to become a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS); the CAPS program has been developed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in collaboration with the AARP in order to address the consumers that will require modifications to make their house a home for a lifetime. Thanks to this training, we can suggest products and designs conceived to make the average home more functional and easier for everyone to use regardless of age or ability. “Now you can have a stylish bathroom that does not need to look like a nursing home.”
Home performance assessment and solutions
If UD makes your home easier to use and navigate, green strategies strive to increase indoor comfort and reduce energy use. Our approach to home improvement is not only to make you home look better but healthier for you and friendlier to the environment.
Going green goes farther than using low-VOC paints, installing CFC-free materials or recycled tiles; it is foremost making your home more energy efficient and by doing so more comfortable. People know there is a problem, but it is converting that knowledge into action plan that is difficult. Making energy retrofits is more complex than its looks. If improperly installed, measures such as air sealing and adding insulation can do more harm than good, resulting in problems ranging from elevated indoor humidity and mold, to poor indoor air quality and even back-drafting of carbon monoxide through combustion appliances.
Based on in-home measurements and diagnostic data collected with the use of a blow-door fan, thermal imager, and other monitoring equipments, we can help find the different reasons of the comfort problems and energy inefficiency and create a plan to resolve them from the most important one to the most cost effective one; the plan of action can include a variety of energy efficiency measures that encompass the building envelope, its heating and cooling systems, its electric system, and electric consuming appliances. Your biggest investment is not the cost of your home; it's the cost of operating that home for the rest of your life. The home performance assessment does not save money or energy; implementing the recommended improvements is how the savings happens.
Green remodeling is a long-term view of decisions that requires good design, quality installation and, sustainable products. In 2008, our knowledge and enthusiasm for green concepts and practices have earned us the Certification of green professional from the NAHB. In 2009 in order to render a better service and deepen our knowledge in building science, we became a Certified Energy Rater under the auspices of the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), and in 2010 we added to our resume the Building Analyst Professional certification from the Building performance Institute (BPI). Our search for better understanding of the home as a system leads us to pursue our continue education by participating to various seminars during the year.
